The history of human civilization shows a strong link between music and mental and physical healing. Some experts believe that the future of medicine and healing, in general, will have a lot of sound involved. There is ongoing research into the effects of soundwaves on the body’s healing abilities. However, those of us who use sound as a form of healing, already know the power it holds. Let’s delve a bit deeper into how music and sound therapy can help recovery.
My own journey
Like most other people in the world, music is life for me. I cannot go a day without it. My Spotify is full of playlists for every occasion and for me, music will evoke feeling and memory more than any other stimuli.
Later in life, I discovered Japa Yoga. This form of yoga involves chanting Sanskrit mantras which are thousands of years old and come from the Vedic tradition. The sounds created from chanting these mantras are very pure and simple, yet they penetrate the physiology to reset and create healing within our DNA. A study, carried out in May 2022, by Dr. Glen Rein, tested the effects of different frequencies of music on human DNA and also provide therapy for addictions. He discovered the Solfeggio frequency (528 Hz), which is the frequency of Sanskrit and Gregorian chants had the greatest positive effect on DNA between 5% and 9%.
From experience, I know that the sound frequency created by chanting has a huge positive physical and emotional effect on me. It lifts my mood, gives me energy, and generally gives me a better outlook on life. It is advisable to find a teacher who has studied and understands the meaning of each of these powerful mantras to help you learn the correct pronunciation, to get the best outcome. Some mantras are available on YouTube and in honor of the great Tina Turner who has left this realm just recently, here is a video of her chanting a Peace Mantra.
Specific sounds to deal with specific symptoms of illness
I have continued my recovery therapy with a sound healing journey attending sound bath healing events and experimenting with the effects of different frequency sounds on my mind, body, and soul. If you have never experienced a sound bath I highly recommend it. It involves the practitioner using a variety of gongs, bells and sound bowls of different tuning to evoke a response in the body. It is a truly magical experience that takes you on a very personal healing journey.
I have learned that when I am feeling disordered in any area my internal vibration is off. An ordered vibration of sound waves can bring me back into alignment very quickly. Everything in our world is nothing more than vibration resonating at different frequencies. It’s completely mindblowing and I’d be lying if I said I fully understood any of it. All I know is it works for me.
In my obsession with sound healing, I recently came across a list of sound frequencies for different symptoms as follows. You can also look all these up online.
- 174 Hz for stress and pain relief.
- 285 Hz heals tissues and organs
- 396 Hz reduces fear and guilt
- 417 Hz facilitates change
- 528 Hz for transformation and DNA repair (also known as the miracle frequency)
- 639 Hz reconnects relationships
- 741 Hz helps provide solutions and self-expression
- 852 Hz brings the listener back to spiritual order
- 963 Hz encourages a sense of unity
You can also search for Binaural Beats online, which includes frequencies to elicit brainwaves like Delta for sleeping, Theta meditation, Alpha for reduced anxiety and Beta for increased focus. They are also useful in addiction treatment therapy.
The possibilities are endless and while research is limited there is evidence to show that sound frequency is a powerful tool in healing. Even the sounds of nature can evoke a huge healing experience for us. I would really encourage you to do a little research and maybe attend some sound healing classes and music therapy for addiction classes to experience for yourself how powerful it is. I’d love to hear about your sound healing journey.

I have NERER read something so intriguing in my life.
It was almost scary in a good way. Every word that was written regarding how music and sound can help with recovery nailed it!
From late 50’s-mid 80’s I am music knowledge. In fact, without my Spotify, I’m not sure where I would be today. Every day is different, and I have categorized my memories and thoughts into my music list.
There are songs like the “classical gas” that will make me pause as if we were at a sport stadium standing up to sing the national anthem.
Add the song “American Pie” this song to my mind that brings togetherness when it plays it seems like a lot of people sing along with it word by word and it brings this closest/bond regardless, of what mood I am in.
