How Childhood Trauma Fuels Addiction: Breaking the Cycle with STAR Network.

The human brain is astonishingly adaptable and capable of rewiring itself in response to experiences—a gift known as neuroplasticity

While this ability helps us grow, learn, and heal, it also means that the trauma we endure as children can deeply shape our adult lives, often in ways we struggle to understand or control.

For many, unresolved childhood trauma becomes the unseen force driving addiction, creating cycles of pain and self-medication.

At STAR Network™, founded by Dr. Jamie Huysman, we understand this connection intimately.

As an expert in trauma and addiction and a board member of the Polyvagal Institute, Dr. Jamie is at the forefront of addressing how unresolved trauma impacts the nervous system, behavior, and relationships.

STAR Network™ is dedicated to breaking these cycles, offering compassionate support and resources through initiatives like our free TAR Anon™ free virtual support groups for survivors of toxic abuse, addiction, and trauma.

How Trauma Shapes Addiction?

Trauma leaves a mark not just on the heart but on the brain itself. Childhood abuse, neglect, or toxic environments can disrupt normal brain development, flooding young minds with stress hormones like cortisol.

Over time, these disruptions can lead to issues with emotional regulation, cognition, and resilience, making individuals more vulnerable to addiction.

Dr. Gabor Maté, captures this truth beautifully: “Addiction is not a choice. It’s not a moral failure. It’s a response to human suffering.”

Many who have faced trauma turn to substances in an attempt to numb their pain or manage overwhelming emotions. But as Maté also reminds us, “The question is not why the addiction, but why the pain?”

At STAR Network™, we aim to help survivors explore that pain in safe, supportive spaces, where healing can begin.

The Link Between PTSD, CPTSD, and Addiction

For individuals with CPTSD and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), addiction often becomes a way to silence intrusive thoughts, manage triggers, or escape feelings of agitation and hypersensitivity.

This co-occurring condition, known as dual diagnosis, highlights the necessity of addressing both trauma and addiction simultaneously.

Triggers such as insomnia, depression, or social withdrawal can push someone toward self-medication.

While this may provide temporary relief, it leads to deeper addiction and worsens the underlying trauma.

At STAR Network™, we recognize the importance of addressing these dual challenges, offering tools to understand and manage both the pain of trauma and the cycle of addiction.
